January 12th:
The Grand Ole Opry – Backstage Tour
The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, for more than 75 years has had the greatest country music stars in the world grace the Opry stage for its terrific show. There are always surprises at the Grand Ole Opry, and you never know when famous members like Garth Brooks, Dolly Parton, Brad Paisley, and Dierks Bentley may be
stopping by.
As part of the great Grand Ole Opry tradition, step into the dark oak circle behind the microphone. This well-worn, six-foot circle was cut from the stage of the Ryman Auditorium, the "Mother Church of Country Music," allowing performers to stand in the same spot where Patsy Cline made hearts skip with "Crazy," and where Hank Williams defined "Jambalaya" for us all. Check out the dressing rooms, prop rooms and "costumes." You'll see every nook & cranny of the Opry!
Time: Afternoon
Duration: Approximately 2 hours of walking and 30 minutes transportation time.
Attire: Casual clothing along with comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Belle Meade Plantation Excursion
No trip to Nashville is complete without a tour of Belle Meade Plantation! When you tour the Mansion, you walk right into the rooms as if you were a guest in the 1800's. There are no velvet ropes, no glass walls to separate you and our collection. The fully furnished Mansion is stocked with original pieces from the 1800's. Fortunately, we have an abundance of family letters from which to pull a wealth of information. Our costumed guides willingly share the stories surrounding the rise and fall of the Harding and Jackson Family.
Throughout the 45 minute guided tour of the 1853 Greek Revival Mansion, a century of Belle Meade Plantation's history is told through the eyes of the Harding and Jackson Family and the skilled laborers who collectively worked to make the Plantation America's premier Thoroughbred Horse Farm.
Our Gift Shop is so much more than a tourist gift shop…it is a retail destination! We stock many Made-In-Tennessee items. And as if that weren't enough, we have branded a large line of Belle Meade Plantation food products! Country ham, biscuit mix, honey jelly, shortbread cookies, cheese...Mercy! I'm hungry just writing about it!
Time: Afternoon
Duration: Approximately 90 minutes of walking and 30 minutes transportation time.
Attire: Casual clothing along with comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
The Hermitage Mansion Tour
The Hermitage mansion has been meticulously restored to its 1837 appearance and today looks much as it did when Andrew Jackson returned to it after finishing his second term as President. After the home was damaged by fire in 1834, Jackson had it remodeled in the Greek Revival style. Today, six wallpapers installed after the fire still hang on the walls and the majority of the furniture in the home was purchased by the Jackson family to replace pieces damaged in the fire. Personal objects, like Jackson's swords and books, also adorn the home along with the Jackson family's collection of portraits.
When you arrive at the Hermitage mansion costumed historical interpreters greet you and prepare you for your tour. Inside historical interpreters stationed throughout the house tell you about Jackson, his family, and his home and answer any questions you have. On average, the Hermitage mansion tour lasts twenty minutes.
Self-guided tours of The Hermitage grounds have much to offer including the Hermitage garden, Jackson's tomb, and the Beyond the Mansion tour of sites related to slavery, farming, and nature at The Hermitage. All paths are well marked with directional and interpretive signage. Visitors are also welcome to drive approximately one-half mile to the Hermitage Church and Tulip Grove mansion.
